Louis M. Brill is a light artist, holographer, light show operator, and designer of original light projection equipment. He has founded Illuminations, a light-art design center that explores the creation and display of light art.
Louis began his pursuit of light in New York City (early 1970s) by being introduced to coherent light as a “magic wand” that opened the doors to the wonderful world of laser art as demonstrated by holography and laser light shows.
In 1974, he migrated to San Francisco, became involved in the San Francisco Bay Area holographic/laser art community, and eventually developed his own resources of light as a sculptural medium, from incandescent light to LEDs. He uses various transforming mediums from holographic diffraction gratings to crystal filters in massaging light in designing his light sculptures.
Within the collection of light sculptures he has designed, one medium he is very partial to is Lumia. Recently he has built a large format, computer-controlled Lumia projector and explains in great detail how it was designed and built in the Saga of El Grande pages of this website.
Louis is a public speaker, curator and illuminator. In addition, he has curated ongoing collections and exhibitions of Burning Man, public art, light art and holographic works. He is available for speaking engagements and technical consulting in light art; and is actively seeking out other light artists, especially in the area of lumia art.
